A great example for ‘Self-care’ as a cliche is in the tv show ‘Parks and Recreation’
One day a year, Tom and Donna do whatever their hearts desire with the catchphrase ‘Treat yo-self’.
Do what you want, buy what you want, eat what you want… you deserve it!
Unfortunately, rather than self-CARE, it turns into:
- Overconsumption
- Self-Indulgence
- Carelessness
- Self-harm
To define self-care let’s understand what caring means.
Caring for someone is not coddling, spoiling, or giving them everything they impulsively want.
For example, if you were paid 10 million dollars to be the manager of the health of someone you love for the next 5 years…
What would that look like?
- Would you give them all the sweets, dessert, and sugary coffee drinks they want?
- Would you let them overeat until their stomach felt like bursting?
- Would you let them eat fast food every single meal?
- Would you let them sit all day without moving?
- Obviously not.
You would find a way to moderate the pleasures and experiences of life while mostly encouraging healthy and responsible choices.
It’s like being the manager of a 5 year old in your mind that wants to eat, buy and do whatever they want, whenever they want.
Self-care is helping them make healthier and smarter choices for their future self, even if they don’t like it at the moment.
Which looks like being active, exercising, and eating healthier foods…
But also knowing when to rest, when not to workout too hard and when to have some fun!
So how do we use Self-Care to build Confidence?
Confidence is being able to do what you say you’re going to do.
Think about it.
Why do you have confidence or trust in certain people?
They DO what they say they’ll DO.
They ARE who they say they ARE.
They also DON’T do what they say they WON'T do.
Their actions match what they say, consistently.
To build confidence, you have to know when to do the things you need to do..
Even when you don’t feel like it.
But also knowing when you need to rest, even when you feel like pushing.
Exercise is one of the most important Self-Care actions you can take...
Because it affects the quality of your life and even how long you live.
If you know you need to work on self-care but don’t know where to start… start with accountability.
“Accountability is taking ownership for actions that are within your abilities, to achieve a desired outcome.”
- Take simple actions
- Measuring your actions and progress
- Adjust your actions with the feedback you get from measuring
